The COVID-19 vaccine is a type of vaccine developed in such a way as to increase the body's immunity against the SARS-CoV2 virus which causes the COVID-19 disease.

Purpose & benefits of COVID-19 vaccination

There are 4 main goals for COVID-19 vaccination, including:

  • Forming immunity against diseases of most people in a group (herd immunity)
  • Reducing the severity of illness and death of people exposed to COVID-19
  • Protect and strengthen the health system as a whole, especially people in health institutions and institutions who are at the forefront of public services.

  • Establishing herd immunity (especially if there is a sufficient number of people vaccinated in 70%).
  • Protect across groups by giving vaccines to certain age groups in an effort to limit transmission to other groups.

Is the COVID-19 vaccine safe?

All COVID-19 vaccines have gone through clinical trials involving millions of people of various ages, races and ethnicities to ensure the safe use of the COVID-19 vaccine. Close monitoring after vaccination is still ongoing today. In Indonesia, the circulating COVID-19 vaccine has received EUA (Emergency Use Authorization) from the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM).

Side effects that can arise from the COVID-19 vaccination

The side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine that most often occur are mild, such as pain and / or redness at the injection area, weakness, headache, muscle pain, low-grade fever. From the results of clinical trials, almost nothing shows serious side effects such as allergic reactions. However, it is recommended that vaccine recipients remain in the hospital for 30 minutes after administering the COVID-19 vaccine to ensure that there are no serious side effects.

People who are recommended to be vaccinated against COVID-19

All levels of Indonesian society are recommended to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. However, the Ministry of Health determines the criteria and priorities for vaccine recipients based on the Circular Letter of the Directorate General of Disease Prevention and Control No. SR.02.06 / II / 10950/2020.

This vaccine is prioritized for vulnerable groups aged 18-59 years, consisting of:

  • Health workers.
  • Public service officers.
  • Working groups of productive age and contributing to the economy and education sector.
  • Residents who live in risky places such as densely populated areas, close contact with COVID-19, as well as government administrators in the field of public services.

The process of implementing the COVID-19 vaccination

According to the Indonesian Ministry of Health, there are 3 things that need to be considered in the process of implementing the COVID-19 vaccination, including:

  • The administrative dose given is two doses per person with a minimum distance of 14 days so that it can form optimal immunity (antibodies) against COVID-19.
  • Vaccination service providers are doctors, nurses and midwives in health service facilities, both government, private, and academies / educational institutions, the Port Health Office (KKP), TNI and Polri in the Public Private Mix (PPM) network.
  • The technique and place for implementing immunization are adjusted based on the study of the Indonesian Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (ITAGI), namely the 18-59 year old group, and carried out in government health service facilities, puskesmas, RSUD / RSUP, office / company clinic, private hospital, midwife private practice, and other places included in the immunization service post.

Keep in mind the symptoms that arise after vaccination for each person can vary, because everyone has a different immune system and metabolism. Therefore, it is very important if there are things that you feel there are complaints after the vaccination process to get checked out immediately. We all hope that this vaccine can eliminate the pandemic that we have felt for the past year.
